Student robotics
Seasonal challenges that bring together engineering, coding, teamwork and competition.
- The format
- Seasonal field games, missions and skills challenges, often with team judging.
- Who’s in control?
- Programme dependent: autonomous tasks, driver control or both.
How it works
Student robotics competitions turn an engineering brief into a shared sporting challenge. Teams design a machine, practise a game and learn to perform under time pressure. The work includes strategy, testing, documentation and communication as well as making the robot.
FIRST, VEX and RoboCupJunior offer different programmes and routes into the activity. Some use defined hardware platforms; others allow wider design choices. Age eligibility, supervision, local support and the current season’s rules should guide the choice.
